Text: Matthew 21: 1- 11
Introduction.
- It is the week of Easter in Jerusalem. - The biggest Jewish celebration. Remembered the liberation of Egypt. - Historians inform that around 2500 thousand persons arrived to bepart of this festivity. - All the adult, Jewish, that lived in the 30km radios of Jerusalem, was obliged by law, to be at this festivity. - In this environment Jesus enters Jerusalem.
A) The triumphant entrance.
- Matthew 21:2. The entrance was planned by Jesus. - The little donkey that never have been mounted. - Illustration: I Samuel 6:7. The car that drove the Chest should be news. - The Chest was symbol of the presence of God amongst the people. - Now is Jesus amongst the people, the living God. - He arrives seated in a little donkey, in sign of peace. - Generals in war, entered cities mounted on horses. - It is Jesus last call for the people to opened their hearts. - He never wanted a throne to reign, he wanted hearts. - His Kingdom was spiritual.
B) The dramatization .
- When the people don’t want to hear the message it was common that the prophet would do a dramatization. - Illustration:
- I Kings 11: 29 - 32. The prophet Ahijah tears his cloak in front of the king Jeroboam. The nation would be divided in 12 tribes.
- Jeremiah 27: 1- 6 - Jeremiah puts yokes on his shoulders to notify the king Zedekiah ( Jeremiah 27:12 ). They should submit themselves to the king of Babylon Jeremiah 28: 10 - 11. Hananiah, the prophet brakes the yoke in the front of all the people.
- Zechariah 9:9 fulfills his prophecy in this moment of the life of Jesus.
- He wanted the people to heard him, it was his last attempt.
C) The greeting 'Hosanna'.
- Matthew 21: 9, signifies 'Saves us now Master'. - From Psalm 118: 25, 26. - It is the plea of this oppressed people. - 'The Lord’s is not closed'.
D) The secret to the public.
- Mark 11: 18-19. Faced with death threat, Jesus withdraws himself. - But upon entering in Jerusalem he is exposed completely. - John 12:1. Six days before Easter, Jesus entered Bethany. - John 12:12-14. In the following day he enters in Jerusalem. - Publicly He enters in the city. - He walks through the city until he is betrayed. - Publicly He is taken to the home of Caiphas and faced with Pilate. - He is taken to the Calvary and dies exposed in the Cross.
Conclusion.
- About 250 thousand lambs were sacrificed during Easter. - The law regulated, that one lamb should be sacrificed for every 10 persons. - The lamb should not have any defect. - Matthew 22: 15. Herodians, Sadducees, Scribes, Pharisees and Pilates ( John 19:4 ). Nobody found any flaw in Jesus. - With the death of Jesus, there was no need of other sacrifices. - He enter Jerusalem in glory, leave for the hill of the Calvary in humiliation. - It was God’s plan for our salvation.
