Texts: Ephesians 6:13 and Mark 14:32-42
Introduction - Don’t ask: 'Will the evil day come?' - It will certainly come. It’s important to be prepared to receive it. - In the Old Testament we have Daniel (in the Lion’s den) and Jeremiah (in the wheel) - In the New Testament, Paul and Silas (Philippi’s jail). - The disciples. Matthew 8 (in the storm) - And the Lord Jesus in Gethsemane. As ourselves, Jesus had no special 'armour plating' - What attitudes does Jesus take in the evil days?
01. He prays - Mark 14:32,35,39 - Mark 14:33 say that “He was sad and troubled”. - In these words we see Jesus’ humanity. - Then, He insists to the Father and seeks spiritual strength. - We can’t let go of the super-natural power. - Jesus’ himself needed this power, so do we.
02.He shares
- Mark 14:33,34,37 - Five thousands had of the bread. 70 people were sent. 12 were chosen as disciples. - But only 3 were close to Jesus. -He calls his friends asking them to pray with him. - Luke 22:28-29 “You have stayed with me” - What do we need to find in the church?
• The possibility of a service. • To practice our spiritual gifts • To have a friend
- When alone, it’s easier to be defeated by Satan. - James 5:16. When we confess, we dismantle Satan’s trap.
03.He presents his pain to the Father.
- Mark 14:36 - Abba= Father, demonstrates intimacy. Romans 8:15. - In the Old Testament people should not use the name of God. - Jesus created a new intimacy with the Father, going to the cross. - Illustration: In Job chapter 30 , we see Job’s protest - Job 19:25. Job’s declaration of Faith - James 1:2. Talks about joy in the middle of trials. - We have no means to run out from trials.
04. He understood that other people’s help were limited.
- Mark 14:37,40 - In certain moments we have to face our troubles alone. - Mark 14:42: “Get up! Let’s go.” - Mature people understand this. Don’t throw their problems on others.
