How the Father Receives us - (02/06/05)

Text: Luke 15:22-24

Introduction

- In Luke 15, Jesus tells us 3 parables.
- The shepherd who looks the lost sheep. The woman who cries over the lost coin. The father who loves and accepts his son back.
- The shepherd had 100 sheep and loses one. He loses 1%.
- The woman had 10 coins and loses one. She loses 10%
- The father had 2 sons, loses one He loses 50%.
- Or 100% because the so was considered a slave, even though he had his father inheritance.
- The idea is that in the house of the farm there was large porch.
- The father seated there everyday and would look far away, waiting for his son to come back.
- What is the hope of this father? "One day he will come back."

01. Quick! Bring the best robe.

- Change the old clothes and dirty for new clothes.
- A sign of honor, exaltation.
- Fine clothes that would go all the way to the feet, which were used by important people in special occasions.
- It marked the beginning of a new life. The past didn’t matter anymore.

02. Put a ring on his finger.

- Sign of a special feeling.
- In this case explains father’s love.
- Slaves didn’t wear rings, especially gold ring.
- It was also a sign of wealth. Genesis 41:42, Joseph.

03. Sandals on his feet.

- The young man went out with the best shoe. He came back barefoot.
- Came back as slave, who didn’t wear shoes.
- Wishes to be a hired man. Who worked in the farm during the day and left at 6 pm.
- Some slaves were like part of the family. Lived in the farm, had a house, food and bed.

Conclusion .

- Luke 15:20. "Race of God."
- God runs after the lost one when he decides to come back.
- This farmer is the picture of God. He was waiting.
- Luke 15:24 "was lost". He was out of place.
- "Keep the fattened calf." Party, happiness, food.
- From the eating with the pigs to his father’s table.
- Luke 15:21. The young man had nothing to say: "make me one of your hired man."
- Why? It is impossible for a son to become a hired man.
- We are sitting around the Lord’s table today to celebrate the returning of the father.
