Text: I Corinthians 11:23-29
Introduction.
Corinth was an important trade center. The apostle Paul preached the gospel there during his second missionary journey. It was a new church, with many problems and it needed a lot of guidance. This letter was written before the Gospels, therefore we have here the first reference to how we should partake of the Lord's Supper. v. 23 "took a loaf of bread" It's a symbol of Christ's Incarnation. Let's remember the 3 shameful situations Jesus went through:
a) The Incarnation: He came to this world. b) He died on a cross: Like a murderer. c) He founded the Church, which has been a disappointment to him.
Romans 8:3 . Jesus was sent in a human body, not in an angel's one. v. 24 "which is broken for you" His suffering instead of ours. His body would be broken on the cross, like the bread,to give us redemption. Illustration: Judas was at the table with Jesus.Jesus gave him a piece of bread. To serve the meal meant to honor the person that would eat it. Try to imagine Jesus's spiritual ,and afterwards, physical suffering. v.24b "broken for you" He is our substitute. Isaiah 53:5 had already predicted this substitution. Illustration : Genesis 22:6-13 There was a substitute for Isaac and for us as well. v.29 "eat the bread and drink from the cup" He is inviting us. "Examine yourself": You're supposed to participate! "If one's life is not examined frequently, it will become worthless."(Socrates)
Conclusion.
John 13:30. Judas doesn't partake of the Lord's Supper. You are invited to join us. "Unworthily" It means to participate without knowing what you're doing, without having an experience with Christ.
