Seating Under a Broom Tree - (04/17/05)
Text: I Kings 19:1-4

Introduction.

I Kings 19:3. “Being afraid” is not fear, but discouragement.

It is a result of emotional and physical tiredness.

I would like to ask permission to speak to a small group today.

From those who are discouraged.

Illustration: Pr. Eliel’s visit to our church.

A sales took place in hell. The devil sold everything, except discouragement.

Discouragement is a powerful weapon.

The two victories of Elijah.

1. The victory over 450 priests of Baal and the 400 prophets of Asherah. I Kings 18:19

2. God sends rain ( I Kings 18:45-46 ) after 3 years of drought (I Kings 17:1 ).

I Kings 18:46. Elijah runs ahead and puts himself in the gardens of the Ahab palace.

It was supposed to be the day of “glory” to Elijah. He had scored the “goal of the title”.

A) A terrible news.

I Kings 19:1. Ahab was the seventh king in the Northern Kingdom, a kingdom that rejected the descendants of David. He married Jezebel, daughter of a foreign king.

He loved the god Baal and even built a temple in Samaria.

Ahab did not speak about the God of Elijah to Jezebel, but spoke about Elijah.

I Kings 19:2. The message from Jezebel to Elijah.

Elijah thinks more about Jezebel than about his God.

A false hope: Elijah thinks that with the death of 850 servants of Baal, everything was resolved.

Application: Our false hopes.

1. The wife or husband who prays for his/her spouse’s conversion. He or she converts. But the relationship does not improve.

2. A believer may think: if the church had another pastor, all the problems would have been resolved. One day, the pastor leaves. Another one comes and the problems remain. False hopes take away our enthusiasm.

It is amazing how we have difficulties on identifying with Elijah in the Mount Carmel (I Kings 18:37-39)

But it is easy to identify with Elijah under the Broom Tree. ( I Kings 19:4

B) The prayer under the Broom Tree.

I Kings 19:3 “left his servant there”.

Nobody was able to follow Elijah.

Broom Tree: Plant that grows in the desert.

It has small leaves, yellow flowers and can reach up to 10 feet high.

Elijah prays four times in the Book of Kings.

1. When he resurrects a girl. I Kings 17:20.

2. When he asked fire from heaven. I Kings 18:36.

3. When he asked for rain. I Kings 18:42

4. When he asked for death. I Kings 19:4. The only request that God did not respond.

Elijah was confused. He runs away for his life, sits, and asks to die.

Exactly as we do many times.

The problem when I sit under the broom tree: “I only see the sand. I only contemplate the desert”.

Conclusion.

“Theory of the cat and her kittens”.

She carries her kittens by the neck.

“Theory of the little monkeys”. They grab their mother’s neck and are carried by her.

Applications:

It is God who carries me, whether I want it or not.

I take hold of God and He takes me whenever He wants.

Seating under a broom tree. A place of discouragement.

Discouragement, Satan’s favorite tool. .BR
