 | | | Dealing with Temptation - 01/18/04 |
Introduction
- Presenting the book "Breaking chains" by Neil T. Anderson. (Books with the most important ideas of this message)
- Ephesians 2:1-5. We are born physically alive, spiritually dead.
- Philippians 4:19 . We try to satisfy our needs with world's resources, of the flesh or of the devil.
- Temptation: "It is an invitation that I receive to sin" Application: What do I do with an invitation? Accept or reject.
- 3 ways in which Satan seduces us.
| 1. | THE CONCUPISCENCE OF THE FLESH. I John 2:16 |
- What is the concupiscence of the flesh? Appetites, wishes, passions.
- Genesis 3:2 "do not eat"
- Matthew 4:4 - Jesus had the same test and over came it.
| 2. | CONCUPISCENCE OF THE EYES. I John 2:16 |
- Genesis 3:6 "And seeing the woman..."
- That in which pleases the eyes.
- Matthew 4:6 . This test, Jesus also won
- When do we fail this test? When we wish more than the world offers, more than a relationship with God.
| 3. | LIFE'S PRIDE I John 2:16 |
- Genesis 3:5 "and you will be like God"
- Exalt yourself.
- Matthew 4:8-10 . Here, Jesus also won.
- All of the things that the first Adam failed to do, the second, Jesus, did.
Conclusion:
- Where is the escape of the temptation? In the place where it begins, in the mind. Let's read I Cor. 10:13
- Do not "ruminate" the temptation in your mind.
- Attention for the two cycles that occur during temptation.
| 1. | Sin- Confession- Sin- Confession- Sin... Mental force does not break this cycle. |
| 2. | Sin- Confession- Resistance. James 4:7 . Resist is the way out. |
- I John 2:1
- Not only God and this sinful world exist.
- Do not forget about the lawyer.
- Satan wants to do from good things, Sin (page 132) Physical rest- becomes laziness.
Ability to gain money- becomes greedy Pleasure in eating- becomes gluttony. Communication- becomes gossip. Goodness- becomes super protection. Sexual Liberty- becomes immorality.
- We are not tempt in big things: stealing, killing, but in small things.
Final illustration:
Nail and stick: Tied together you cannot break the stick.
