 | | | I am the Good Shepherd (02/01/04 - Evening) | |
Text: John 10:15
Introduction:
- John 10:11b "... The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep".
- Exodus 22:13 . Says what the law established about the care with sheep.
- The shepherd had to bring evidence that the sheep had died, and that he could not have done anything.
- I Samuel 17:34-36 , David tells Saul about his care with his father’s sheep. To the point of facing a lion and a bear.
- The true shepherd though first in the sheep under his protection, and then in himself.
- The false shepherd used the flock only as a way of making money.
- The false shepherd did his job for money.
- The true shepherd did his job for love, to the point of giving his life for his sheep.
- Jesus is the good shepherd, we are his sheep.
| 01) | The sheep hear the shepherd's voice. John 10:4 |
- Sheep do not have sense of direction, like cats.
- Refers to people who are open to the gospel.
- Luke 9:35 – God says: "This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him."
- In John 10:13 , He calls the sheep by name.
| 02) | Jesus knows his sheep. John 10:14 |
- What David says in Psalms 139:15
- Matthew 10:30 details how much God knows us
- Jesus always dispenses us an exclusive treatment.
Bartimaeus: Jesus stopped and said, "Call him." Jairus: Went to his house. The women with a flow of blood: Someone has touched me. The Rich Young Man: "Go, sell everything you have" Samaritan Woman: You have already had five husbands.
- The relationship method that Jesus used was "eye in the eye".
| 03) | The sheep follow Jesus. John 10:4 |
- Matthew 10:16 – It's an undefended animal. Needs to be protected.
- Follows the pastor to the pasture, to the water, to the sheepfold.
- Unlike the goat, an animal that is not submissive.
- To follow the wrong person is bad.
- In the spiritual plan, following the wrong path is a tragedy.
| 04) | Jesus gives eternal life. John 10:15 |
- From John 10:11-18 , the expression “I give my life” appears four times.
- It reinforces the truth of the good shepherd ready to sacrifice his own life in favor of his sheep.
- The sheep: hear and follow.
- The shepherd: knows and gives his life.
- He speaks. We hear.
- We ask ( John 14:5 ). He knows the way.
- He leads us.
We receive life. He gives life.
Conclusion:
- Accidentally, a shepherd could die for a sheep.
- John 10:18 "Jesus can give life and can take it away".
1. Jesus is talking about his death. 2. See the power of the good shepherd, including over death.
- Romans 6:23 – What is the wage of sin? Death.
- Jesus had no sin, and died.
- "I have the power to give my life and to take it back". (Ressurection).
- The good shepherd is a winner over sin and death.
