Text: Matthew 2:11-12
Introduction.
- What did you receive as this Christmas’ present?
- What did you give as a present this Christmas?
- The text talks about the presents that the wise men brought to Jesus.
- Wise Men: They were trustable men in the days of Jesus.
- The presents brought to Jesus had a prophetic message.
- Gold, incense and myrrh.
A) Gold.
- The most precious metal for the King.
- No silver, no bronze, but Gold for the greatest King.
B) Incence.
- Aromatic and blank resin extracted from a tree.
- In the temple at the time of the service, it was burned on the altar.
- Every morning the high priest burned incense on the altar.
- One time a year, on the day of the atonement, the high priest would enter the Holy Place and burn the incense.
- The perfume would spread in the whole temple.
- The animal blood smelled very strong. The incense purified the air.
- The symbolic meaning of the incense was: Atonement for sin and confirmation of the high priest ministry.
- The wise men brought incense for the One who would be the perfect high priest.
- Priest: Unites the human to the divine. Bridge that links.
C) Myrrh
- It was also an aromatic substance that mixed with oil would serve to anoint Aaron and the other priests.
- John 19:39 – It was used to prepare Jesus’ body by Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea.
- On the day that Jesus was born, a prophetic present, his body would be sacrificed for all humanity.
